After what was a very disappointing season for Manchester United they now need a squad overhaul. Solskjaer’s men finished a massive 32 points behind Manchester City in first place. They missed out on Champions League football and haven’t really challenged for the title since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013.
It is clear that United need to strengthen their side in certain areas of the pitch more than others. A centre-back is thought to be Solskjaer’s priority as United have never been able to replace Vidic and Ferdinand since they left. But they are also lacking in goals and creativity. Lukaku and Rashford managed just 22 goals between them in the league last season. Comparing that with Mane, Salah and Aubameyang who all got 22 each, it shows back up is needed.
For the summer transfer window United are, once again, being linked with Harry Maguire. After an impressive World Cup last year it was thought he may be on his way to Old Trafford. However, the price tag of £75 million put United off. Man City now appear to want him as Vincent Kompany has left the club. This will be an interesting one as the Leicester defender is 26 years old and may look for a move soon.
Koulibaly is another name being mentioned. The Senegalese centre-back has been one of the best in the Serie A for the past few seasons. United are interested in the defender but Napoli are looking for a fee in excess of £90 million. Ancelotti has also said he is going nowhere. United are going to have to spend big to land the defender who is also wanted by Real Madrid with Ramos supposedly on his way out.
The final potential transfer is Matthijs de Ligt. The young Dutch defender is a player every club would like. He was rumoured to be heading to Barcelona but United came in as strong contenders, the talented defender could slot right into the current United squad. However, United reportedly scratched the deal this week so his future is uncertain.
It looks as though a deal for Daniel James is nearly done. The Welsh winger impressed in the Championship last season, especially with his electric pace. This is something Manchester United need as they have been very slow when attacking this season. James is reportedly going to cost United somewhere between £15-20 million.
Another Welsh winger that has been linked with United is Gareth Bale. He has found it very hard to get minutes at Real Madrid since Zidane returned. It appears as though the club is doing all they can to get him out. United have needed a right winger for many years and Bale could be the one.
Both men are currently on international duty but could their manager, and United legend, Ryan Giggs put in a positive word for Solskjaer?
In terms of people leaving Old Trafford, there could be a few. Romelu Lukaku is apparently looking for a way out with Inter Milan very keen on the striker. Several clubs have expressed an interest in Paul Pogba including Real Madrid and Juventus.
Juan Mata has yet to sign a new deal with his current contract expiring at the end of June. De Gea is another one with only one year remaining on his contract and has reportedly turned down all of United’s current offers.
