Manchester United are thought to be finalising a deal for Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred, with the 25-year-old due in England this week with the Brazil national team.

That’s according to the Manchester Evening News. They add that the deal has not been concluded, although there is expected to be no issues surrounding the transfer.

The midfielder has a £52.5million release clause in his contract, although United may not meet that clause; instead, paying less in a transfer fee, with various bonuses and performance-based add-ons on top – eventually taking it to around the £52.5million release clause should all those goals be met.

Fred will be in the North West over the next few days, as his Brazil side take on Costa Rica in a Friendly at Anfield on Saturday. This feels like the perfect time to get the deal done and dusted. It’d also give Red Devils fans some peace of mind before the World Cup starts, as if it isn’t completed before the tournament, the transfer saga would likely continue until afterwards.

In terms of a replacement for Michael Carrick, Fred is a good match. He’s the perfect box-to-box midfielder who should complement both Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba wonderfully well.
