Manchester United face a huge test against a youthful Ajax team at the Friends Arena on May 24th with the Red Devils having a depleted squad due to injury to key players.

United lost 2-1 to Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Sunday in the Premier League, with only 15 players available for the visitors to pick from, Jose Mourinho was forced to start some of his wards out of their comfort zone.

Spurs outplayed United at the Lane as they bid farewell to their home ground since 1899 and it led to pundits asking if Mourinho will have enough firepower to combat a free-scoring Ajax side in Stockholm. But the Portuguese tactician hinted he already has plans in mind ahead of the all important final.

“You had a team at the maximum of their potential with all the players with motivation to win in the last match at home [Tottenham] and there was another team trying to find some balance even with some players who were not playing in their best position. But we tried to give minutes to the people that need minutes and to protect people that need to be protected,” Mourinho said while reflecting on the Spurs defeat.

“I analyse the individual performances of the players, try to understand who can give me a little bit more for the final. Of course I have in my mind already what I think is going to be the team but the players can influence decisions with positive or negative performances.”

United will return to Premier League action on Wednesday night against Southampton at the Saint Mary’s.
