Europa League final referee announced, Mourinho to face nemesis in Stockholm

UEFA has announced the referee to take charge of this season’s Europa League final between Manchester United and Ajax at the Friends Arena in Stockholm, Sweden on May 24th.

Damir Skomina has been named as the man in charge of the 2017 UEFA Europa League final, it was announced on Friday.

Skomina is not new to United supporters especially current Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho as the 40-year-old Slovenian officiated as United took on Ajax in the Europa League in 2012 at Old Trafford; United lost 2-1 but went through 3-2 on aggregate

The news may not be the happiest for Mourinho as the Portuguese once called the 40-year-old official ‘weak and naive’ while in charge of Chelsea in October 2015, after Skomina failed to award the Blues a penalty at Dynamo Kiev.

“The referee was weak and naive. Big penalty,” Mourinho said after the goalless draw in Ukraine.

He later retracted on his comments by saying sarcastically: “I think the referee was very good. I’m serious.”
