Europa League round-up: Manchester United join trio in the last four

Manchester United have joined Lyon, Celta Vigo and Ajax in the semi-final of this season’s Europa League after beating a spirited Belgian Anderlecht in extra time at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

Jose Mourinho’s side are through to the last four after defeating Anderlecht 3-2 on aggregate.

United held a narrow advantage coming into tonight’s game, having bagged an away goal in Belgium. They built on that through Henrikh Mkhitaryan after just ten minutes.

Paul Pogba played a stunning through ball from deep into the path of Marcus Rashford in the nervy quarter-finals second leg clash, the England forward who had wasted what appeared the best chance in the game towards the end of the first half, played the ball into Mkhitaryan’s feet, and he fired past Ruben with a stunning finish to bag his tenth goal of the season.

The scores were level at full-time, and the game headed to extra-time but that wasn’t the only worry for United as Zlatan Ibrahimovic landed awkwardly and was forced off the field. It didn’t look good on first viewing.

But video suggests that the 35-year-old Swede striker may well have suffered serious ligament damage, and could miss the remainder of the season.

Elsewhere, Lyon knocked Turkish side Besiktas out with a 7-6 penalty shootout victory, La Liga club Celta Vigo beat Genk 4-3 on aggregate while Dutch giants Ajax sent German outfit Schalke 04 packing with a 4-3 aggregate win despite losing 3-2 at the Volkswagen Arena.

The semifinal draw will be made on Friday.
