A 3-0 win over Saint-Etienne at Old Trafford on Thursday night put Manchester United in a strong position ahead of next week’s trip to France where they face the Ligue 1 club in the second leg.

Swede superstar striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored all three goals for Jose Mourinho’s side last night, it was the 35-year-old’s first hat-trick for the Red Devils since joining from PSG in the summer as a free agent.

However, going into the second leg, Mourinho revealed he plans to play a defensive game and try to score a goal at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard as the tie is far from over even with the three-goal advantage.

“I’ve had crazy experiences in football. I was losing against Tottenham once, 3-0 at half-time, and we drew 3-3,” Mourinho said.

“I was winning, it was Real Madrid against Galatasaray, we won 3-0 at home and then were losing 3-1 in Istanbul [the tie ended in a 5-3 aggregate win for Real].

“I have been through so many crazy experiences that I believe in anything. We have to go there, defend well, not concede and try to score a goal that will put them in a very difficult situation.”

United face Blackburn Rovers in the Emirates FA Cup fifth round at Ewood Park on Sunday.
