Southampton knocked Liverpool out of the EFL Cup on Wednesday night following a 1-0 defeat in the second leg at Anfield after the Saints had already beaten them with the same margin at St. Mary’s last week.
The man who scored the only goal of the game late into stoppage time to shock the Anfield crowd Shane Long has revealed a tactical plan to stifle Jurgen Klopp’s midfield and distort them them from connecting with the attack worked like magic and the reason why they are on their way to Wembley for the first time in 13 years.
“Keeping a clean sheet against Liverpool is no mean feat,” Long said.
“I think it came from the whole team trying to force them out wide and not letting them make passes through the middle to get one-on-ones with the keeper.”
Liverpool’s latest home loss to Claude Puel’s side is thier second successive home defeat which took their run of poor form to one win in their first seven games of the new year.
Southampton will now face either Manchester United or Hull City in February 26 final at Wembley Stadium.
