Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) has named its male and female footballer of the year for 2016.

A Costa Rican player emerged winner for the first time while United States striker Alex Morgan won the female category.

Former Fulham striker Bryan Ruiz was named male best player for last year.

Ruiz was signed by Fulham in August 2011 for £11.6m from Twente, but only managed 12 goals in four Premier League seasons at Craven Cottage before he was sold to Sporting for £700,000 in July 2015.

The 31-year-old helped Sporting Lisbon finish runners-up in the Portuguese league in 2015/16 and his country reach the final stage of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

He netted 11 goals in 40 appearances for Sporting as they finished two points off their first Primeira Liga title since 2002.

Morgan’s award meanwhile is her second under the siege of CONCACAF.
