Barcelona thrashed  Borussia Monchengladbach  4-0 at Camp Nou to finish off the group stage in style.

With classification top of Group C already assured this match was a dead rubber although they used it to build confidence after some shaky recent performances.

Arda Turan was out to prove a point and netted a hat-trick while Lionel Messi opened the scoring on a night where he made his 549th game for the club, becoming Barcelona’s joint fourth all-time appearance maker, alongside Migueli—Xavi (767), Andres Iniesta (603) and Carles Puyol (593) are the leaders.

Messi opened the scoring when he drove forward, exchanged a one-two with Arda Turan and fired home. It was what he wishes he did against Real Madrid in the Clasico, when he spurned a similar chance by firing wide before Sergio Ramos’ late equaliser.

Arda made it two shortly after the break, nodding home at the back post after Denis Suarez’s deflected cross made it through to him, before notching another when Aleix Vidal set him up and ramming home a third from close range.

The Catalans showed here why the other sides in the competition will be hoping to not to draw them on Monday December 12.
