The 28-year-old still has two years to run on his current contract at the Emirates Stadium but the Arsenal talisman has ruled out an extension.

German midfielder Mesut Ozil has made an assassination attempt on the heart of Arsenal fans by claiming he could return to Real Madrid when his contract expires in 2018 according to Spanish tabloid Marca.

Ozil is Arsenal’s most expensive signing of all-time after joining the north London club in 2013 from La Liga giants Madrid and has gone on to become a pivotal part of Arsenal’s success in recent years but a return to the Santiago Bernabeu remains inevitable.

“I am very happy playing in such a big club like Arsenal, which has amazing fans and they also encourage me a lot,” he said.

“I am playing very well in London, but in football you never know… We’ll see what happens in the future.”

Ozil sparkled for Arsenal last season providing 19 assists for the Gunners in all competitions though a low key start to the new campaign has seen him score seven times, supplying four assists in 17 games.

Arsenal, who saw their 19-match unbeaten streak ended by Southampton midweek in the EFL Cup, travel to the London Olympic Stadium tomorrow to play West Ham United.
