Comparison is almost like a recurrent decimal in football and more often than not, modern day footballers with exceptional talent are likened to their primordial predecessors.

In the same vein, Barcelona star Lionel Messi has been compared to Argentina legend Diego Maradona by Germany’s most capped player ever Lothar Matthaus as the modern mirror-image of the former world Cup winner ’30 years ago’.

Five-time FIFA Ballon d’Or winner Messi is often compared to his countryman due to the similarities in their playing style and influence on the game.

“Messi is now what Maradona was 30 years ago,” Matthaus told Fox Sports.

“To speak of Mexico ’86, I can make it short and speak only of Maradona. I never saw a player who dominated a World Cup like he did in 1986.”

Matthaus faced Maradona twice in World Cup finals in 1986 and 1990.
