On Sunday, Leicester City will take on Manchester United in the Community Shield, the competition which signals the start of England’s premier domestic season.
The Shield has produced many enthralling matches and terrific goals, and with that in mind, here are five of the very best. Enjoy…
5. Manchester City 3 – 2 Chelsea, 2012
City and Chelsea have developed an interesting rivalry over the past few years, and this match is right up their among their best encounters. Chelsea took the lead through a Fernando Torres finish, but once their right-back Branislav Ivanovic was sent off for a rash challenge, City appeared to take all control.
Yaya Toure dragged his side back into contention, and then Carlos Tevez gave his side the lead with a stunner, before Samir Nasri’s deflected effort put the game beyond Chelsea.
Ryan Bertrand managed to pull one back for Roberto Di Matteo’s side, but City held on to claim their fourth Community Shield.
4. Chelsea 2 – 2 Manchester United, 2009
One of the great encounters between Chelsea and Manchester United commenced with Nani scoring for United in the ninth minute with a long range effort, before goals from Ricardo Carvalho and Frank Lampard gave Chelsea the lead with twenty minutes to go.
In the 92nd minute, however, a lethal Wayne Rooney latched onto a through ball and finished beyond Petr Cech, sending the match to a penalty shootout.
United choked on the spot-kicks, and Chelsea finished theirs emphatically, winning 4-1 on penalties.
3. Manchester City 2 – 3 Manchester United, 2011
This was a great comeback win for United, after the Red Devils found themselves 2-0 down at half-time thanks to goals from Joleon Lescott and Edin Dzeko.
But their never-say-die attitude, which Alex Ferguson had instilled so well at United, was present here yet again, with Chris Smalling converting from a cross to reduce the deficit, before two goals from Nani, including a 90th minute winner, secured the Community Shield for the Old Trafford side.
2. Leeds 4 – 3 Liverpool, 1992
Eric Cantona, who was to join Manchester United a few months after this match, grabbed a hat-trick as Leeds and Liverpool took part in a goal-fest at Wembley.
Ian Rush and Dean Saunders grabbed strikes for the Anfield club, while Gordon Strachan also managed an own goal in their favour.
Toni Dorigo also scored for Leeds as the league champions triumphed over FA Cup winners Liverpool. Cantona, of course, stole the show.
1. Arsenal 3 – 0 Manchester City, 2014
Arsenal have won the FA Cup twice in recent memory, and have followed those victories up with two Community Shield successes.
The more memorable of these was their 3-0 thrashing of Manchester City, who just didn’t seem ready for the new season.
New goalie Willy Caballero had a day to forget, as Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud all beat the Argentine to give Arsenal the perfect start to the season.
