Newcastle United could complete the signing of Arsenal’s 26-year-old left-back Kieran Gibbs before transfer deadline today, reports suggest.
It is understood Toons boss Steve McClaren wants to sign a left-sided
defender as well as a striker, with hope that a deal for Roma forward Seydou Doumbia can be sealed as well.
That would leave Newcastle to turn their full attentions to Gibbs, but will only happen if Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has adequate cover for Nacho Monreal.
Gibbs has fallen behind Monreal in the pecking order at the Emirates Stadium and has started just two games this season in the Barclays Premier League.
“He went through a period that was difficult for him but now he is back with full power and commitment and he is very fit,” Wenger said about the England defender.
“He will get games and he is a quality player. There is competition and I understand what you say, players have that target of the European Championships.
“But the first and the most important one is the club and the achievement of the club. To be at the European Championships is always a consequence of what you have done at the club.”
