Arsenal are beginning their transfer business early, with SkySports reporting this week a deal to sign Mohamed Elneny from Basel is close.
It would be a mistake for Arsenal to make him their only addition, given that they are so close to winning their first league title in a decade, and Arsene Wenger must be ready to splash out.
Here are five players the Gunners could sign to add to Elneny…
Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama would be an instant upgrade on Mathieu Flamini or Mikel Arteta, and Arsenal should consider splashing out. The Saints will be reluctant to sell mid-season, but this the time for Arsenal the flex their financial muscle, and make an offer Ronald Koeman’s side cannot refuse.
The Polish midfielder has been outstanding for Sevilla for a number of seasons now, and like Wanyama, would really strengthen Arsenal in central midfield. He is also familiar with coming up against Champions League opponents Barcelona, which could prove valuable with Francis Coquelin facing a fight to be fit for the first leg.
Only Harry Kane has scored more Premier League goals in 2015 than Jamie Vardy’s 19, and Arsenal could become an even more formidable side by adding him to their strike force. With Vardy and Alexis Sanchez up front, opposition defences would not get a minute’s rest, although convincing Leicester to sell mid-season would be a tall order considering their league position.
Marseille forward Michy Batshuayi is the second highest goalscorer in Ligue 1 this season with 11 goals in 19 games, and is viewed as the next best Belgian striker after Christian Benteke and Romelu Lukaku. Marseille showed in the summer they would cash in on their players at the right price, and he would be a smart and cost-efficient alternative to Olivier Giroud – who would not require a crazy amount like a Karim Benzema or Gonzalo Higuain.
Should Arsenal attempt to get one up on Barcelona ahead of their Champions League tie by signing one of their midfielders? Talented prospect Sergi Samper is struggling for game time at the Camp Nou, and The Telegraph report, citing Mundo Deportivo, that Arsenal have a real interest in the La Masia graduate.
Who should Arsenal sign in January?
