Manchester United continue to recount the damage following their 1-0 home loss to Southampton on Saturday with club physios confirming that Italian defender Matteo Darmian has broken a rib and punctured a lung after colliding with Shane Long.
The collision left Darmian spitting blood as club physios went to his aid and was immediately taken to the hospital for X-rays before returning to Old Trafford on Saturday night to be checked over further by club doctor Steve McNally.
The 26-year-old is the fifth full-back to be injured for United this season following series of body damages to Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia, Marcos Rojo and most recently Ashley Young.
United boss Louis van Gaal, who was gutted by the incident told reporters after the Barclays Premier League tie. “He was spitting blood on the pitch so he has already gone to the hospital and we have to wait and see what happens. That is the fifth full-back who has been injured.
“Probably there is something wrong in one rib and also the chest but we have to wait and see. It was not a nice view for the players to see that. Darmian is bad because he is now in hospital.”
