Barcelona midfielder Javier Mascherano is currently encapsulated in tax fraud and he appeared in a Spanish court on Wednesday on a two count charge of tax evasion in excess of £1million.
The 31-year-old Argentinian arrived at the court in Gava, a coastal town on the outskirts of Barcelona where he lives, accompanied by his lawyers for the hearing which last five minutes.
Mascherano however admitted failing to declare his earnings from 2011 and 2012 hiding his image rights under companies he owns in Portugal and the United States.
A court filing released last month confirmed Mascherano deposited nearly £1.25m with the tax authorities on September 9 to repay the amount owed plus interest.
“Mascherano admitted the facts of the two counts of tax fraud, so there was no need to interrogate him,” said a judicial source.
The judge will now decide whether the case proceeds to trial.
