Marco van Basten has been appointed as the right-hand man to Netherlands manager Danny Blind.

The Dutch football association said on Thursday that Van Basten has agreed a contract until the end of July 2018 to assist Blind in managing the Holland senior team.

Van Basten, 50, a former Netherlands striker, who was capped 50 times, was coach of the national team from 2004-2008, a tenure that included the 2006 World Cup and 2008 European Championship.

He played a pivotal role in his country’s 1988 European Championship glory.
