Barcelona presidential candidate Joan Laporta is confident his side are favourites to sign 23-year-old Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba.
Laporta was Barca’s supremo between 2003 and 2010, and is aiming to begin a second stint in the role as president by winning the election next month.
He faces incumbent Josep Maria Bartomeu, but has aimed to convince Barcelona fans that with him as president and Eric Abidal as his technical secretary Pogba is a realistic target.
His confidence is based on the fact that he shares a salubrious relationship with Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola.
Raiola is a tycoon in Europe when it comes to transfer dealings, and the Italian has orchestrated over £400m deals since he became a pro football liaison.
“We feel that the key to a potential signing of Pogba is Mino Raiola, with whom we get on with very well, both [Eric] Abidal and myself,” Laporta told reporters.
“We carried out negotiations with him for the deals involving Maxwell and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.”
