Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has confirmed Spanish left-back Jose Enrique is set to feature against Sunderland this weekend, the 28-year-old took part in Thursday’s training session at Melwood.
“Jose Enrique is back in. We are having to manage Jose and his games, but he has trained and should be available for the weekend. Everyone else, it is as it was,” Rodgers said.
Enrique joined Liverpool in 2011 from Newcastle and established himself in the first-team. His progress was however sabotaged by a long-term knee injury which required surgery.
He made just nine appearances for the Reds last season before undergoing knee operation in November that brought his campaign to a premature end.
He resumed training in July this year and enjoyed some playing time on the Reds’ pre-season tour to the United States.
However, prior to the commencement of the 2014/15 campaign, Enrique declared himself available for Liverpool’s opening Barclays Premier League match against Southampton but suffered another injury setback.
The Irish coach also provided an update on the fitness of Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho ahead of the Black Cats’ visit to Anfield on Saturday.
“Philippe Coutinho had a slight issue with his knee during the week but he should be OK for the weekend,” Rodgers added.
