Ander Herrera has been ruled out of action for Manchester United this weekend after picking up an injury in training on Thursday morning.

News of his injury is a major blow to United’s road to recuperation, after suffering a 2-1 home defeat to Swansea in their first league game of the season.

Herrera, who joined the Red Devils this summer from Athletic Bilbao for a transfer fee in the region of £24m, will miss the club’s Premier League match against Sunderland on Sunday.

Meaning United boss Louis van Gaal will be without all his summer signings which includes defenders Marcos Rojo, and Luke Shaw, as well as Marouane Fellaini, Jesse Lingaard, Michael Carrick, Jonny Evans and Rafael for Sunday’s trip to the Stadium of Light.

Herrera, Shaw and Rojo cost Louis van Gaal’s side a combined club record transfer fee of £72m this summer.
