A report in the Daily Telegraph claims Chelsea are weighing up a surprise bid for Tottenham midfielder Paulinho, which could involve a swap deal that will see on-loan Everton striker Romelu Lukaku head to White Hart Lane.
The 25-year-old Brazilian playmaker joined Spurs for £17 million from Corinthians last summer, as part of the club’s overhaul following the world record sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid, but has failed to impress at the North London club.
After a promising start under former manager Andre Villas-Boas, Paulinho was sidelined by an injury sustained against Stoke in December and has found himself out of favour since Tim Sherwood took over.
Chelsea’s move for the midfielder is, according to the Daily Telegraph,
Roma and AC Milan are also reportedly interested in Paulinho, represented by agent Giuliano Bertolucci, who also played a role in David Luiz, Ramires and Oscar moving to west London.
But while Spurs will be compelled to sell Paulinho to their London arch-rivals rivals, they may be enticed by a titillating allure for Belgian forward Lukaku, who has scored 14 goals on loan for the Toffees this season and Chelsea want £25m, roughly the same amount Spurs will demand for Paulinho.
