German and European champions Bayern Munich ended Manchester United’s Champions League dream on Wednesday night at the Allianz Arena with a 3-1 win which secured the Bavarians a 4-2 aggregate score and sent David Moyes’ side packing.

The Red Devils gave Bayern a scare in Germany on the night, producing a disciplined defensive first-half display before taking the lead, courtesy of Patrice Evra’s superb strike on 57 minutes.

However, that second-leg lead would last for all of two minutes as the home side ultimately won the game after first-leg at Old Trafford ended 1-1.

Meanwhile, an apparently unfit Wayne Rooney was disappointing throughout a game in which Bayern, undisputedly, dominated possession.

The Germans struggled to find the key to unlock United’s backline but after Mario Mandzukic’s equaliser on 59 minutes, they started to find gaps, with Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben also getting on the score sheet.

Overall, it was a brave and decent display from the Premier League champions, but with qualification for next season’s tournament dead and buried, it could be some time before the Red Devils return to Europe’s big stage once again.

Elsewhere at the Vincente Calderon stadium, Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid side produced yet another superb performance to knock La Liga giants Barcelona out of the Champions league quarter-finals with a spirited 1-0 second-leg win to secure a glamorous and epic semi-final qualification over their arch-rivals.

Playmaker Koke was goal-hero for the Madrid side, with a brilliant header just five minutes into the first-half, he also hit the woodwork three times early on as they stunned their more illustrious fellow compatriot with a 2-1 aggregate score-line, after the first-leg tie at the Nou Camp ended 1-1.

After the break, Barca pushed for a goal, with Neymar going close late on but overall the La Liga leaders were well worth their last four berth.

Exciting times for Simeone and co., with a league and Champions League double now a distinct possibility.

At the end of proceedings last night, Bayern and Atletico progressed to the semi-finals while United and Barcelona bowed out.

Semi-final draws is scheduled for Friday, April 11.
