Arsene Wenger has taken an audacious gamble ahead of Tuesday night’s Premier League visit of Swansea City, as the Arsenal manager is reportedly set to drop the trio of Wojciech Szczesny, Olivier Giroud and Mikel Arteta from his squad to face the Welsh side their 6-0 massacre at Chelsea.
Despite overseeing a severe injury list, which will once again deny him three major midfielders – Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere and Mesut Ozil, plus another forward Theo Walcott.
Wenger wants to shake his team following the abject surrender to Jose Mourinho’s Premier League leaders, which virtually ended Arsenal’s hopes of winning the title.
Szczesny is set to be replaced in goal by Lukasz Fabianski following some fallible displays while Wenger is considering leaving attack spearhead Giroud out of the squad completely and giving him a rest ahead of Saturday’s top-of-the-table clash against Manchester City.
Giroud is expected to be replaced in the starting XI by fellow Frenchman Yaya Sanogo, who is in line to make his first Premier League start.
Rookie striker, 18-year-old Chuba Akpom, who returned from a loan spell at Coventry City on Sunday, led the line for the Under 21s against West Ham on Monday afternoon, could secure a place on the bench against Swansea since Nicklas Bendtner is completely out of the first-team picture following his disciplinary troubles and not expected to play for Arsenal again.
