Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe has written his name in gold as he becomes Spurs leading European goalscorer edging Martin Chivers’ previous all-time record as they advanced to the knockout stages of Europa League following a 2-1 home win over FC Sheriff.

Erik Lamela scored his first goal for Spurs when he drilled home just few minutes from the hour, before the home side were awarded a penalty six minutes later.

Defoe converted the resultant penalty, to notch his 23rd European goal for the club, eclipsing Chivers’ previous all-time record for Tottenham.

Andre Villas-Boas was pressured in the final 15 minutes when Sheriff pulled a goal back through Ismail Isa, but White Lilies held firm to book their place in the last 32 at the White Hart Lane.
