Diego Costa overtook Cristiano Ronaldo as top scorer in La Liga scoring his 12th goal of the season with the Portugal forward still on 11th as Atletico Madrid beat Granada 2-1 to stay second with just a point behind leaders Barcelona.
Two penalties, one from Costa who now has 12 for the season, and another from David Villa, meant that Atletico restored their five-point lead over
third-placed city rivals Real.
Spain forward Villa won both of Atletico’s penalties at Granada’s Los Carmenes stadium, La Liga top
scorer Costa netting the first in the 38th minute for his 12th goal of the campaign.
Villa converted his spot kick in the 78th before Atletico fullback Felipe Luis was shown a second yellow card and sent off and Odion Jude Ighalo pulled a goal back for the home side in the first
minute of added time.
Argentine coach Diego Simeone has been able to mould the team into formidable title contenders, as they now have 30 points from 11 league games, while Barca remain unbeaten topping the chart with 31 points after beating Celta Vigo 3-0 on Tuesday and Real Madrid are third on 25 points following 7-3 thumping of Sevilla at home on Wednesday.
