Manchester local authority are set to rename a road, Water’s Reach road leading to Old Trafford after former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Chapman Ferguson.
The municipal accolade will be announced officially at an Honorary award ceremony scheduled for Monday afternoon to confer the enigmatic Scot with Freedom of the Borough of Trafford.
Lord Fergie would be recognised for his achievements with the Old Trafford outfit between 1986 and 2013, period in which he won 38 trophies including 13 Premier League titles.
This iconic echelon means Sir Alex is towing in the footsteps of another legendary United manager, Sir Matt Busby, who had the former Warwick Road North named in his honour in 1993.
The 71-year-old British Knight, already has the former North Stand at Old Trafford named in his honour, with a bronze statue on display outside Old Trafford.
He also has the Freedom of the City of Glasgow. At the time the Trafford honour was announced, Ferguson said:
‘I am delighted to accept this honour
from Trafford Council. ‘When I arrived at Old Trafford in 1986 I had little
idea of the journey that awaited me.
‘Over a quarter of a century later, to receive the Freedom of the Borough of Trafford, and to have a part of Trafford carrying my name, is truly humbling.’
Leader of the Council, Cllr Matt Colledge added: ‘Sir Alex has contributed significantly to Trafford over a sustained period of time through his strong leadership of the Manchester United team and it was felt that the Honorary Freeman title and the renaming of the street was a fitting tribute to him.
‘Football contributes significantly to the borough through the large number of visitors it attracts and jobs it creates.
